#ShadesofMentalHealth: Mental Wellness Matters in Southwest Atlanta

July is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the unique mental health challenges faced by communities of color and encouraging everyone to seek the care they deserve.

At HEAL, we know that mental health is just as important as physical health. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, stress, grief, trauma, or relationship challenges, you deserve compassionate, culturally responsive care close to home.

As your neighborhood healthcare home in Southwest Atlanta, HEAL is committed to making behavioral health services accessible for individuals and families throughout Atlanta and surrounding communities.

Mental Health Care Is Still Unequal

Mental illness affects people of every race, ethnicity, age, and background. Yet people of color continue to experience significant barriers to receiving quality mental health care.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA):

  • Nearly 1 in 5 U.S. adults experiences a mental illness each year.
  • Black, Hispanic, and other minority populations are less likely to receive mental health treatment than White adults, despite experiencing many of the same mental health conditions.
  • Research shows that only about 39% of Black adults with mental illness receive treatment each year, compared with approximately 52% of White adults.
  • Language barriers, lack of insurance, transportation challenges, stigma, and a shortage of culturally responsive providers all contribute to disparities in care.
  • Untreated mental health conditions can increase the risk of chronic disease, substance use disorders, unemployment, family stress, and reduced quality of life.

These statistics remind us why conversations about mental wellness—and access to care—matter so much.

Breaking the Stigma Starts with Us

For many families, discussing mental health has long been considered taboo. Some people worry they’ll be judged. Others believe they should simply “push through.”

The truth is that seeking help is one of the strongest things you can do.

Mental health conditions are medical conditions—not personal failures. Early support can improve relationships, strengthen families, reduce stress, and help people return to living the lives they want.

Whole-Person Care for the Entire Family

At HEAL, our experienced Behavioral Health Team provides compassionate, confidential care for:

  • Individuals
  • Couples
  • Children and adolescents
  • Entire families

Because HEAL offers integrated care, our behavioral health professionals work alongside your primary care providers to support your overall health. We recognize that emotional well-being, physical health, family relationships, financial stress, and community support all play an important role in healing.

Whether you’re navigating life changes, caring for a loved one, experiencing anxiety or depression, or simply feeling overwhelmed, we’re here to help.

Three Simple Ways to Support Your Mental Health

Professional counseling is an important part of mental wellness, but healthy daily habits can also improve emotional well-being.

1. Stay Connected

Meaningful relationships help protect against anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Spend time with friends, family members, neighbors, or members of your faith community. Even one supportive conversation can make a difference.

2. Spend Time Outdoors

Nature has a remarkable ability to calm the mind. Whether you visit one of Atlanta’s beautiful parks, walk your neighborhood trail, or simply sit outside for a few quiet moments, spending time in green spaces has been shown to reduce stress and improve mood.

3. Find Exercise You Enjoy

Movement is medicine. Walking, dancing, gardening, swimming, cycling, yoga, or playing with your children can all boost mood by releasing natural feel-good chemicals in the brain. The best exercise is the one you’ll look forward to doing.

Mental Wellness Is Community Wellness

This month, let’s continue breaking the stigma surrounding mental health—especially within communities of color.

At HEAL, we’re proud to provide behavioral health services to individuals, couples, children, and families across the Atlanta metro area. Our caring team is here to help you build resilience, strengthen relationships, and improve your overall well-being.
